Tim Cook, a prominent figure at the Canadian War Museum and a leading expert in Canadian military history, passed away, as confirmed by the museum on Sunday. Described as a dedicated advocate for the museum and Canadian military history, Cook made significant contributions to the Ottawa museum during his more than twenty-year tenure, as noted by Caroline Dromaguet, the museum’s president and CEO.
Having authored over 19 books and receiving numerous accolades, Cook’s work was recognized with the Ottawa Book Award for literary non-fiction on four occasions. In his recent book titled “Life Savers and Body Snatchers: Medical Care and the Struggle for Survival in the Great War,” Cook uncovered shocking revelations about Canadian doctors’ involvement in a British program that harvested organs from deceased First World War soldiers without consent.
Reflecting on his findings, Cook expressed his disbelief at the lack of historical documentation on this matter, emphasizing its absence from the conventional narrative of how fallen soldiers were treated. Among his notable publications are “No Place to Run: The Canadian Corps and Gas Warfare in the First World War” and “The Necessary War, Volume 1: Canadians Fighting The Second World War: 1939-1943,” both of which received the prestigious C.P. Stacey Award for excellence in Canadian military history.
In his latest work, “The Good Allies,” released late last year, Cook delved into the intricate relationship between the United States and Canada during the Second World War. Highlighting contemporary relevance, Cook underscored the ongoing challenges in balancing cooperation with the U.S. while safeguarding Canadian sovereignty. Noteworthy achievements in Cook’s career include the Governor General’s History Award and his induction into the Order of Canada.
