Outgoing mayor Maja Vodanovic narrowly lost the municipal race in Montreal’s Lachine borough by a margin of 26 votes, highlighting the city’s trend of closely contested elections. The election results from all 125 polling stations in Lachine revealed that Julie-Pascale Provost of Ensemble Montréal secured victory with 5,056 votes, unseating Vodanovic who received 5,030 votes.
The tight competition extended to the election of the borough’s sole city councillor, where Dominic Roussel of Ensemble Montréal clinched a victory by a mere eight votes over Myriam Grondin of Projet Montréal. In Parc-Extension, Elvira Carhuallanqui of Projet Montréal emerged victorious in the city councillor race by a slim margin of six votes, defeating the incumbent Mary Deros.
Similarly, in Côte-des-Neiges, Projet Montréal’s Émilie Brière secured the city councillor position by a narrow six-vote margin over Ensemble Montreal’s Yvonne Nguyen. In Côte Saint-Luc, David Tordjman triumphed over Mitchell Brownstein by just a single vote, while in Hampstead, incumbent Mayor Jeremy Levi narrowly defeated Jack Edery by 26 votes.
Notably, there is no automatic recount process for closely contested races, but candidates have the option to request a recount within four days of the election results being certified, as confirmed by an Élections Québec spokesperson.
The recent election in Montreal led to a change in leadership, with Soraya Martinez Ferrada of Ensemble Montréal being elected as the new mayor, marking the end of Projet Montréal’s eight-year rule.
