Gavin McKenna, the former top pick in the 2026 NHL draft, showcased his skills by scoring 129 points in 56 games for the Western Hockey League’s Medicine Hat Tigers last season. Transitioning to the NCAA with Penn State, McKenna had a decent start, scoring four goals and 18 points in 16 games before representing Canada at the world junior hockey championship in Minnesota. Despite finishing as the second-highest scorer in the tournament and contributing to Canada’s bronze-medal win, McKenna faced criticism for not dominating key moments.
Acknowledging the pressure on him, McKenna attributed his motivation to his family’s support. While he made significant contributions to Team Canada, including a strong performance on the power play, he only scored once in the crucial semifinal match against the Czech Republic. Despite the setback, McKenna expressed satisfaction with his overall performance, gaining confidence for future competitions.
Swedish winger Ivar Stenberg emerged as a contender for the top pick in the NHL draft with an impressive showing at the world juniors, while McKenna faced heightened scrutiny due to his draft status. McKenna’s handling of the pressure impressed Canadian head coach Dale Hunter and teammate Michael Hage, who praised his composure and focus on the game.
Despite some criticism for shying away from physical play, McKenna’s puck-handling skills were commended by his peers. Looking ahead, McKenna aims to improve his game and mental resilience as he returns to college hockey with Penn State. Throughout his journey, McKenna draws strength from his family during challenging times.
