The search is underway for the culprits behind the theft of valuable jewels from the Louvre over the weekend, with concerns rising that the stolen items may never resurface.
Early Sunday, a group of four individuals arrived at the renowned Parisian museum in a truck, used a ladder to access the second floor, and forcefully broke in. Authorities noted that the perpetrators appeared well-prepared and targeted specific treasures from French royal history, completing the operation in roughly seven minutes.
The targeted loot consisted of French crown jewels, emblematic of the nation’s heritage and monarchy. Housed in the opulent Apollon Gallery on the museum’s second level, these irreplaceable pieces were the focus of the heist. Among the stolen items were two diadems, including one adorned with sapphires, a necklace and earrings linked to 19th-century French queens, an emerald set once belonging to Napoleon Bonaparte’s second wife, and several brooches, notably one worn by Empress Eugénie, the wife of Napoleon III.
While the thieves managed to abscond with eight valuable artifacts, one of Empress Eugénie’s possessions, her emerald-set imperial crown containing over 1,300 diamonds, was recovered outside the museum, albeit damaged. The estimated value of the stolen items is deemed “priceless,” given their historical significance and unique nature, making them difficult to trade in their original form without detection.
Notably, instances of high-profile thefts from cultural institutions are not uncommon. Past incidents include the notorious theft of the Mona Lisa in 1911 from the Louvre, the heist of the “Big Maple Leaf” gold coin from a Berlin museum in 2017, and the unsolved art robbery at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston in 1990.
Authorities have mobilized efforts to track down the perpetrators behind the Louvre theft, leveraging specialized police units experienced in resolving such cases.
