U.S. President Donald Trump has issued a threat to halt the opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge, which is set to serve as the latest border link between Windsor, Ontario, and Detroit. Trump stated in a recent message that the bridge would not open until the United States receives full compensation and Canada treats the U.S. fairly and respectfully. The White House has been approached for further details, but no response was received as of Monday night.
The President’s declaration was made within a lengthy social media post where he criticized Canada for supposedly treating the U.S. unfairly over the years. He raised concerns about the bridge being constructed with minimal U.S. input and reiterated his disapproval of Prime Minister Mark Carney’s trade discussions with China. Trump argued that considering all the support provided, the U.S. should have at least a 50% stake in the project.
Although the $6.4 billion Gordie Howe bridge was entirely funded by Canada, joint ownership lies with Canada and the state of Michigan. Construction on the six-lane passage began in 2018 and is now largely finished, with final testing and inspections underway for an anticipated opening early this year.
The bridge has been at the center of a prolonged legal dispute involving the American proprietors of the existing Ambassador Bridge and the federal government. Despite initial objections from the Moroun family, who own the Ambassador Bridge, Trump had previously endorsed the Gordie Howe project in 2017, emphasizing its importance as an economic connector between the two nations.
Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens has refuted parts of Trump’s claims, noting that U.S. steel was indeed utilized in the bridge’s construction from the Michigan side. Dilkens expressed astonishment at the President’s statements and highlighted the necessity for upcoming elections to potentially bring about beneficial changes.
Governor Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan has come out in support of the bridge, emphasizing its job creation benefits for workers from both regions. Whitmer’s press secretary underscored the project’s bipartisan and international collaboration, affirming the bridge’s imminent opening and the governor’s anticipation of the inauguration ceremony.
Michigan Senator Elissa Slotkin, a Democrat, criticized Trump’s threat to impede the bridge, citing detrimental impacts on the state’s economy. Slotkin emphasized the importance of fostering positive relations with Canada and highlighted the potential consequences of canceling the bridge initiative.
Trump’s recent actions towards Canada, including the bridge standoff and tariff threats, come amidst ongoing trade renegotiations within the CUSMA framework. While the President has made several tariff threats in the past, concrete actions have yet to materialize. However, Trump retains the authority to block the bridge’s opening with a single decision.
