U.S. Democratic Representatives Joaquin Castro and Jasmine Crockett paid a visit to a five-year-old Ecuadorian boy and his father at a federal detention center in Texas on Wednesday. This visit came shortly after the boy was detained by federal agents in Minneapolis. The incident has fueled outrage over the immigration policies of the Trump administration and has galvanized Democrats and other critics of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
During their time at the South Texas Family Residential Center in Dilley, near San Antonio, the lawmakers spent about 30 minutes with Liam Conejo Ramos and his father, Adrian Alexander Conejo Arias, inside a courtroom. Outside the facility, Texas state police officers engaged with demonstrators supporting the detainees.
A widely circulated photo shows the young boy wearing a blue winter hat and a Spider-Man backpack while being detained, evoking strong emotions. Castro referred to the child as a symbol of the harshness of the ICE and detention systems.
According to Castro, Liam’s father shared that the boy has been asking about his mother, classmates, and expressed a desire to return to school. During a subsequent news conference, Castro, along with other Democrats, called for the release of Liam and other individuals in custody.
The meeting was part of the Democrats’ efforts leading up to the midterm elections to oversee congressional activities and shed light on the impact of Trump’s immigration policies, particularly in Minnesota. Liam and his father were apprehended by ICE agents on January 20 in Minneapolis, where tensions have escalated, leading to protests and tragic incidents involving federal officers.
Neighbours and school officials claim that immigration officers used the young boy as a tactic, instructing him to knock on his house’s door to lure his mother outside. The Department of Homeland Security has vehemently denied this account, stating that the father fled on foot, leaving the child inside a running vehicle.
A federal judge issued a temporary order preventing the Trump administration from deporting Ramos and Arias while their detention is being legally contested. The family’s lawyer indicated that Arias had a pending asylum claim, allowing him to remain in the country.
After the visit, Castro shared a picture on social media showing Liam in his father’s arms with his eyes closed, emphasizing the emotional impact of the situation.
Crockett, a Texas Democrat vying for a Senate nomination, expressed concern over the lack of education for children at the detention center, emphasizing the need for better treatment.
Tensions escalated outside the detention center as protesters clashed with law enforcement, resulting in arrests and the deployment of pepper balls. Castro criticized Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, accusing the agency of running an unjust immigration operation reminiscent of a “bounty hunter organization.”
Both Crockett and her Senate Democratic primary opponent, State Representative James Talarico, have called for Noem’s impeachment. Crockett also voted against a bill funding the Department of Homeland Security and its affiliated immigration enforcement agencies.
The situation has prompted a political divide, with some Democrats refusing to approve DHS funding post the tragic incident involving ICU nurse Alex Pretti’s death at the hands of ICE agents.
