Scottie Scheffler has achieved a remarkable feat by winning the PGA Tour player of the year award for the fourth consecutive time, a distinction previously held only by Tiger Woods. Scheffler’s exceptional performance, which included six victories, including two major championships (the PGA Championship and the British Open), places him on the brink of completing a career Grand Slam. Notably, he became the first player since Woods in 2000 to lead the PGA Tour with the lowest scoring average in each of the four rounds.
Expressing his pride in his consistency, Scheffler emphasized the challenge of consistently finishing in the top 10 in tournaments week after week. The award, voted on by players, saw Scheffler competing against Rory McIlroy, Tommy Fleetwood, and Ben Griffin. While the exact percentage of votes Scheffler received remains undisclosed, his achievement is on par with Woods, who has won the award 11 times.
Scheffler’s impressive run of success began after securing his first PGA Tour victory in 2022. With a total of 19 victories in his last 80 PGA Tour events, Scheffler has maintained a remarkable level of performance, finishing in the top three in over 46% of his starts. This season, he led the PGA Tour in 17 statistical categories, showcasing his prowess in various aspects of the game.
Despite facing setbacks earlier in the year due to a hand injury sustained during the holidays, Scheffler found his form just before the Masters tournament, finishing as a runner-up in Houston. This marked the beginning of an exceptional streak for Scheffler, where he consistently finished within the top eight in subsequent events. Notably, he concluded his final six PGA Tour events without a round over par and achieved a run of 21 consecutive rounds in the 60s.
Scheffler’s major victories, including the PGA Championship and the British Open, were characterized by commanding leads, with none of his wins coming down to a tense finish. His dominance on the course was further highlighted by his record-breaking performance at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson, where he equaled the PGA Tour’s 72-hole record with a remarkable eight-shot victory.
Reflecting on his success, Scheffler humorously mentioned that the outcome of a tournament mattered more than the margin of victory. Additionally, Aldrich Potgieter was named PGA Tour rookie of the year, standing out as the sole rookie to secure a tournament victory offering full FedEx Cup points and qualifying for the post-season.
