In August, we are treated to the impressive Perseids meteor shower, known for its abundance of bright meteors and favorable viewing conditions. This year, the peak of the shower coincides with a new moon, enhancing visibility by eliminating moonlight interference.
Peter Brown, a professor at Western University, anticipates a spectacle of bright Earth-grazers during the peak on Aug. 12-13. These meteors, entering the atmosphere and then returning to space, are fast and luminous, offering a captivating sight.
The shower is expected to peak around midnight EDT, potentially showcasing up to 120 meteors per hour, though actual visibility may vary due to location and viewing conditions.
The Perseids began on July 17, with meteor sightings increasing nightly leading up to the peak. Observing a clear sky away from light pollution is crucial for optimal viewing conditions. The radiant point of the meteors is in the Perseus constellation, visible in the eastern sky after sunset.
Besides the Perseids, other meteor showers like the delta Aquariids, alpha Capricornids, and kappa Cygnids are also active, enriching the celestial show. Additionally, sporadic meteors add to the “meteor Christmas” experience.
In addition to the meteor shower, a partial solar eclipse will be visible on Aug. 12 across Greenland, Iceland, Spain, and a small part of Portugal. While Canada won’t witness a total eclipse, observers can see the moon partially obscure the sun, with the extent varying by location.
Safety precautions like using approved solar eclipse glasses are essential for viewing the partial solar eclipse. Astronomers highlight the eclipse as a remarkable opportunity to witness the dynamic interplay of celestial bodies and emphasize the awe-inspiring nature of the event.
