Police in Longueuil, Quebec, have apprehended a woman following the tragic death of a newborn discovered in a bus shelter. The baby was found at a bus shelter along Chambly Road near Briggs Street. Authorities detained a 33-year-old woman in connection with the incident and are assessing her mental and physical well-being. While it has not been confirmed whether the woman is the baby’s mother, there is a possibility she could face charges of infanticide.
Upon discovery, the baby was found naked, extremely cold, and still attached to the placenta. Paramedics from the Coopérative des techniciens ambulanciers de la Montérégie attended to the unconscious infant and performed resuscitation maneuvers before transporting the baby to the hospital.
A call to 911 early Monday morning reported the presence of a baby in the bus shelter, leading to immediate first aid and hospitalization for the infant. Police operations were in progress, and the public was advised to steer clear of the area, with road closures implemented. Longueuil Mayor Catherine Fournier expressed deep concern over the incident, noting similarities to a recent case involving the abandonment of a newborn on Bourgeoys Street.
Authorities also released surveillance footage in hopes of identifying a person connected to the case, emphasizing that the two events are unrelated. The city is closely monitoring the ongoing investigation while ensuring that the individual in custody receives necessary support during this challenging time.
