Duncan McDonald, a 25-year-old defender-midfielder from Powell River, B.C., has been awarded Canada Soccer’s Para player of the year for the second consecutive year. The selection is made by Canadian Para team coaches.
During the IFCPF Copa America in Moldonado, Uruguay, McDonald showcased his skills in the backline, leading Canada to a fourth-place finish. With team captain Samuel Charron sidelined due to injury, McDonald assumed the role of captain and displayed exceptional leadership qualities both on and off the field.
According to Para head coach Drew Ferguson, McDonald’s performance was exemplary throughout the 2025 IFCPF Copa America, where he played every minute of every match as a center back. He topped the tournament in tackles and blocked shots, solidifying his impact as a standout player.
Having debuted in Canada’s Para program at the age of 15, McDonald has accumulated 37 caps, including 34 starts, scoring four goals and providing six assists. His consistent contributions have earned him the title of Para player of the year for both 2024 and 2025.
The list of past Para player of the year winners includes notable names such as Samuel Charron, Damien Wojtiw, Jamie Ackinclose, Trevor Stiles, Liam Stanley, and Brendon McAdam.
