Guy Pollock, a 71-year-old man with severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and immunocompromised, spent over 24 hours in a hospital hallway at Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon. Pollock, who resides in Watrous, Saskatchewan, described his pneumonia treatment experience as distressing, emphasizing his vulnerability to infections due to his lung condition. Despite feeling like he couldn’t breathe, it took a while before he was moved from the hallway to a proper hospital bed.
Acknowledging the efforts of healthcare workers, Pollock expressed understanding of the challenging circumstances they face. He recounted a nurse revealing that there were even worse hallways in the hospital, highlighting the strain on healthcare resources.
The situation caught the attention of NDP associate health critic Keith Jorgenson, who visited Pollock and raised concerns about hospital overcrowding in Saskatoon. Health Minister Jeremy Cockrill, while expressing empathy for Pollock’s ordeal, emphasized the government’s commitment to improving healthcare services. Cockrill mentioned the allocation of additional funds to Saskatoon hospitals to enhance patient care and reduce hallway stays.
In response to the ongoing overcrowding issues, plans are in place to add 109 new acute care beds at Saskatoon City Hospital. Forty of these beds are already operational, aiming to facilitate smoother patient flow and expedite room placements. This initiative aligns with the government’s objectives to enhance healthcare services for residents in the province.
