Summer McIntosh set a new U.S. Open record in the women’s 200-meter butterfly during the event in Austin, Texas. Competing at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swim Center at the University of Texas, the Toronto swimmer, now coached by the renowned Bob Bowman, finished with a time of 2:02.62. McIntosh expressed her satisfaction with the performance, aiming to continue improving towards the world record of 2:01.81.
The 19-year-old, who holds the four fastest times in the event after the world record, praised her training adjustment in Texas under Bowman’s guidance. She commended the welcoming training environment and her positive experience thus far.
McIntosh also showcased her talent in other events, achieving the fastest time in the 400 freestyle on Thursday with a time of 3:55.37. She secured bronze in the 100 butterfly and placed seventh in the 100 backstroke. Canadian athletes claimed five podium finishes, including three gold medals, during the competition.
In the men’s events, Ilya Kharun triumphed in the 50 fly and earned silver medals in the 200 and 100 fly. The Montreal native expressed contentment with his performance considering the mid-season timing and lack of extensive long-course training.
Mary-Sophie Harvey of Montreal’s CAMO club clinched a silver medal in the women’s 50 fly and previously won gold in the 400 individual medley. The 26-year-old remains optimistic, viewing each race as an opportunity for growth.
Alexanne Lepage and Blake Tierney also secured silver medals in the 100 breaststroke and 100 backstroke, respectively. Tierney, battling injuries, expressed satisfaction with his results considering the circumstances and his training regimen.
Overall, the U.S. Open Championships featured impressive performances from a variety of Canadian swimmers, highlighting their talent and dedication in the pool.
